The standard

What Def Stan 02-862 covers

Def Stan 02-862 is the UK Ministry of Defence standard for threaded fasteners used in naval and defence equipment. HAGUE FASTENERS makes Def Stan 02-862 fasteners to drawing, from single replacements to batches of several hundred, with the testing, marking and paperwork each part of the standard asks for.

The standard comes in three parts. Part 1 guides material selection. Part 2 covers the procurement of Non-First Level fasteners. Part 3 covers the procurement of First Level fasteners: the highest integrity class, where the grade, the mechanical tests, the impact tests and the marking are all defined and must be proved.

Def Stan 02-862, Issue 3

  • Part 1: material selection
  • Part 2: procurement of Non-First Level fasteners
  • Part 3: procurement of First Level fasteners
  • Metric and unified threads
  • Carbon and low alloy, stainless, duplex and non-ferrous grades

First Level grades

Carbon and low alloy steel: SM1, SM2 and SM3

Part 3 sets three submarine grades of carbon and low alloy steel fastener, each in metric and unified threads, covering bolts, screws, studs, studbolts and nuts. Prevailing torque nuts are available in SM1 grades only.

Mechanical properties

What the SM grades must achieve

Charpy V-notch tests are to BS EN ISO 148-1. For SM1 and SM2 the average of three tests must exceed 50 J, with no single result below 35 J. We arrange the tensile, impact and hardness testing with independent UKAS-accredited laboratories and supply the reports with your parts.

Grade and part Yield (MPa min) Tensile (MPa) Elongation (% min) Charpy impact
SM1 and SM2: bolts, screws, studs, studbolts 680 850 to 1000 13 50 J average at 0°C
SM1 and SM2: nuts 525 700 to 850 17 50 J average at 0°C
SM3: bolts, screws, studs, studbolts BS EN 10269 grade 42CrMo5-6 or 40CrMoV4-6 To BS EN 10269
SM3: nuts BS EN 10269 grade 21CrMoV5-7 To BS EN 10269

Stainless, duplex and super austenitic

Corrosion resistant First Level grades

Austenitic stainless fasteners are made from grade A4 to BS EN ISO 3506, in property classes A4-50, A4-70 and A4-80. Duplex, super duplex and super austenitic fasteners are made from bar to BS EN 10088, with the mechanical and impact properties below measured on longitudinal test pieces.

Material Grade 0.2% proof (MPa min) Tensile (MPa) Elongation (% min) Impact (J min)
Duplex 1.4462 450 650 to 880 25 100
Super duplex 1.4501 530 730 to 930 25 100
Super austenitic 1.4547 300 650 to 850 35 100
Super austenitic 1.4652 430 750 to 1000 40 100

Non-ferrous

Nickel alloys, bronzes, titanium and aluminium

For non-magnetic, seawater and high strength duty, Part 3 lists nickel alloys, bronzes, titanium and aluminium, each with its own material standard, condition and minimum proof stress, tensile strength and elongation by size. We hold certified bar in many of these grades, so urgent orders can start straight away.

Material Material standard Marking (metric / unified)
Alloy 400 (NA13) BS 3076-NA13 SM / NA13, SU / NA13
Alloy K-500 (NA18) BS 3076-NA18 SM / NA18, SU / NA18
Nickel aluminium bronze Def Stan 02-833 Part 2 SM / NAB, SU / NAB
High strength CNM alloy Def Stan 02-835 SM / CNM, SU / CNM

Identification

First Level marking you can trace

Every First Level fastener carries its grade symbol and a batch identity, so each part can be matched to its material certificate, heat treatment and test results even after it has been fitted. Metric parts are marked SM and unified parts SU.

We hard-stamp or laser-mark the identity on each part, and for SM1 grades it is applied before zinc plating, as the standard requires.

  • Carbon and low alloy: SM1-M, SM2-M, SM3-M or SM1-U, SM2-U, SM3-U
  • Austenitic stainless: A4/50, A4/70 or A4/80 followed by SM or SU
  • Duplex, super duplex, super austenitic: DSS, SDSS or SASS followed by SM or SU
  • Non-ferrous: SM or SU with the alloy symbol, for example SM / NA13 or SU / 718

How we supply

From order review to certified release

Def Stan work is about proof as much as machining. Every order is reviewed against the part of the standard, the issue and the drawing before we cut any metal, and the evidence is collected as the work goes through.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a First Level fastener?

A fastener in the highest integrity class of Def Stan 02-862, bought to Part 3. Its grade, mechanical and impact tests, marking and documentation are all defined by the standard and must be proved for every batch.

What is the difference between Part 2 and Part 3?

Part 2 covers the procurement of Non-First Level fasteners, and Part 3 covers First Level fasteners, which carry tighter requirements for testing, identification and traceability. Part 1 helps select the material.

Can you make nickel aluminium bronze fasteners to Def Stan 02-833?

Yes. We machine nickel aluminium bronze bolts, studs and nuts, and other non-ferrous grades such as Alloy 400, K-500, 625 and 718, from certified bar.

Do you mark the fasteners?

Yes. First Level parts carry the grade symbol and a batch identity, hard-stamped or laser-marked. SM1 parts are marked before zinc plating.

Do you make unified (inch) sizes as well as metric?

Yes. We make SM1-U, SM2-U and SM3-U and the other unified grades, from 1/4 in to 2 in and beyond to drawing.

Can you supply small quantities?

Yes. From a single replacement to batches of several hundred, with the same testing and documentation.
