Advanced machine screw guide for UK engineers: A reliable resource

Understanding machine screw sizes is essential for anyone working with precision fasteners, whether in manufacturing, engineering, maintenance or repair. Even small differences in diameter can affect fit, performance and safety. Therefore, having a clear reference for fractional‑inch, decimal and millimetre equivalents is incredibly useful.

At Hague Fasteners, we regularly support customers who work across both imperial and metric systems. As a result, we’ve created a simple and accurate reference chart to help you convert fractional‑inch measurements into decimal and millimetre values with confidence

Why Machine Screw Size Conversions Matter

Machine screws are produced in a wide range of diameters, and many industries still rely on fractional‑inch sizing. However, drawings, OEM specifications and international standards often mix imperial and metric units. This means engineers frequently need quick, reliable conversions to avoid errors.

Accurate sizing helps with selecting the correct drill size, ensuring thread compatibility, avoiding tolerance issues, maintaining safety and performance, and reducing rework or material waste.

Machine Screw Size Conversion Chart

This chart provides a clear comparison and is designed to make fastener selection easier, especially when working across mixed measurement systems. For specific guidance on your application, please contact sales@haguefasteners.co.uk

Plastic Packaging Tax Statement (PPT)

Plastic Packaging Tax

What is the Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT)?

The PPT came into force on the 1st April 2022. It applies to plastic packaging used in products imported into, or manufactured in the UK, that do not contain at least 30% recycled plastic for companies that produce in excess of 10 metric tonnes of plastic packaging per annum.

What is the purpose of the tax?

The aim of the PPT is to encourage businesses to increase the use of recycled material in the production of plastic packaging for products. Demand for recycled material is expected to increase the collection and recycling of waste plastic thus reducing the amount which is landfilled or incinerated. The rate of PPT increases in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as advised by the UK Government.

Hague Fasteners and the Plastic Packaging Tax

The total amount of Plastic Packaging used by Hague Fasteners falls significantly below the PPT threshold.

From the 1st April 2022 Hague Fasteners Limited monitor in scope, out of scope, and exempt packaging on a continual basis to determine any PPT liability.

Hague Fasteners ensure that all Plastic Packaging used within our operation contains 30% recycled plastic, as an absolute minimum, and where possible seeks alternative materials to completely eliminate the use of plastics.

We recognise that we are all in challenging times in terms of global environmental impacts and we all have a part to play in addressing threats to our planet.  Hague Fasteners is fully committed to assessing, understanding and improving its environmental impact and performance.

In the unlikely event that the threshold of 10 tonnes is reached, then as per our obligations, we will register with HMRC as liable to pay PPT on all applicable packaging used within our Company and will then :-.

  • report and with best endeavours complete HMRC tax declarations accurately.
  • Provide evidence for all exemptions and recycled content declarations.
  • carry out due diligence checks to ensure product specifications are and remain accurate.
  • identify, investigate and qualify alternative packaging methods for future targeted packaging improvements.

We monitor in scope, out of scope, and exempt packaging on a continual basis which easily helps us to determine any future PPT liability.

Declaration

Hague Fasteners are exempt from PPT as the total amount of Plastic Packaging used by us falls significantly below the 10 tonnes PPT threshold. Further as a commitment to improving our Environment we strive to eliminate the use of plastic completely from our packaging and where this is not possible commit to ensuring any products used contain at least 30% recycled plastic.

If it is determined that there is a PPT liability at any time in the future, then Hague Fasteners will assume all related PPT liabilities on all applicable packaging.

We confirm that Hague Fasteners customers shall not have any liabilities in respect of PPT on all applicable packaging used within Hague Fasteners products purchased from the company.

Conflict in the Ukraine Statement

Conflict in the Ukraine Statement

Hague Fasteners condemns, in the strongest possible terms, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. We express our solidarity and sympathy with the Ukrainian people at these times of peril and deeply regret the loss of human lives due to military action.

Hague Fasteners strongly deplore and condemn the invasion of Ukraine by Russia that is currently underway. This unprovoked attack on the territorial integrity of Ukraine is a clear violation of international rules, and it poses a real threat to peace and security in Europe and beyond.

Hague Fasteners supports the conclusions of the special meeting of the European Council of 24 February 2022. The agreed sanctions must enter into force immediately and be vehemently upheld. These sanctions sent a message to the Russian leadership that the international community will not tolerate Russian military and aggressive actions on the territory of another country.

For this military attack on Ukraine the leaders and elite of Russia and Belarus are responsible. People and business owners widely condemn these barbaric actions. Therefore, European Institutions and national governments should put forward contingency measures to protect EU citizens, enterprises and workers active in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus.

Hague Fasteners do not accept developments that threaten democracy and the functioning of the free market. We wholly support sanctions that will now impact directly or indirectly all businesses and of course these sanctions have an effect on global supply chains.

This conflict shows again the importance of a strong and united World where we all stand up to aggression affecting our brothers and sisters facing oppression in all corners of the World.

Hague Fasteners Risk Exposure & Operational Resilience

Hague Fasteners has no suppliers in Russia, Belarus nor Ukraine, the direct impact of the conflict to materials availability is minimal to zero. Our sourcing in surrounding countries both sourced directly and indirectly through our approved suppliers network totals a very limited part of our procured materials volume and can be, because of its generic nature, easily redirected.

We do, however, anticipate indirect impact which may affect supplies, particularly cost levels, for instance transportation, energy costs etc. At this point the world is dealing with increased levels of unpredictability and uncertainty, whilst continuing to deal with the effects and aftermath of a global pandemic.

We are closely monitoring the situation and will keep our news channel updated of any developing implications.

Environmental Effort – Carbon Neutral

In August of 2021, Hague Fasteners partnered with (more:trees) in an effort to plant trees in some of the World’s most essential Countries with an aim to become Carbon Neutral by 2024.

This ambitious commitment to our planet will need the Hague Forest to grow by 200 trees each year which will offset Carbon emissions from our Special Fasteners Energy consumption by sequesting over 75 Tonnes of Co2 from our tree planting projects in Haiti, Kenya and Madagascar.

Planting just 200 trees each year will help improve our impact on the environment while supporting climate action. Each tree we plant sequesters an estimated 0.3 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide over its growth life – meaning that our target of 200 per year will eventually result in 60 tonnes of CO2 being absorbed from the atmosphere in the future.

You can track our progress and learn more about this exciting initiative on our dedicated webpage https://www.haguefasteners.co.uk/carbon-footprint/

PED Fasteners

Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU Annex I, Section 3.1 and 4.3 (PED) Fasteners

Hague Fasteners are pleased to present their registration certificate following the Audit and Approval of their allied ISO9001:2015 QMS and in accordance with the additional requirements and material controls endorsed by the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU Annex I, Section 3.1 and 4.3. for the supply of critical PED Fasteners.

Hague Fasteners manufacture extensively for many critical industries, such as Pressure Vessels, Subsea Bolting, Offshore Oil & Gas, Chemical, Construction and Nuclear to name but a few, and the reassurance with regard to their material controls ensures full compliance with the stipulations of the current Pressure Equipment Directive. Only the very best Quality Sourced and fully traceable Mill materials are utilised in PED released bolting projects, eliminating all risks that much of the Bolting and Engineering Sectors are plagued with due to cheap and inferior bolting grades flooding the marketplace from overseas.

Hague Fasteners are able to manufacture and supply fasteners and fixings for the pressure equipment industry in a range of sizes, materials and specifications and further work within the confines of even tighter OEM Specifications from many of the Worlds most highly respected Oil & Gas Producers.

Hague’s PED Approved Scope of Manufacture includes sizes from M3 (1/8″Dia) up to M300 (12″Dia) and in a complete and wide range of materials including Carbon Alloy Steels, Chrome Moly (CrMo) Steels, Stainless Steels, Duplex & Super Duplex Grades along with Nickel Alloys (Highly Corrosion Resistant Superalloys) and Titanium Alloys.

This scope allows for the manufacture of Special Fasteners and other Bolts, Nuts and fixings to Global International specifications and Harmonized Standards such as AISI, ASTM, ASME, AMS, BS, EN, ISO, SAE and Norsok.

In a World that demands the utmost control and quality assurance for the sake of Environmental reassurance and critical safety, Hague Fasteners are the Solution for Manufactured Quality Assured Special Fasteners.

Power Generation Fasteners

Hague Fasteners are once again making a massive impact into the British Power Generating Industry.

Hague Fasteners Durehete Stud
CEO Jon Hague with the months largest Turbine Stud as it leaves to repair a UK Power Station

For the last decade or so the Power Generation bolting supply chain has seen an influx of “non” Durehete grades of material, Global Equivalent grades or even custom branded equivalents that often do not tick all of the original CEGB requirements.

British manufacturing of 100% approved British Durehete material could not always compete with the imported equivalents and so Hague Fasteners respectfully backed away from an ever increasingly competitive market that saw quality standards and approvals decline.

2014 has seen a massive shift back to 100% original CEGB British manufactured Power Generation Turbine Studs & Cap Nuts, it seems the industry as moved back to their roots, in much the same way as the Subsea procurement marketplace a decade before, in stipulating the highest integrity material and unquestionable British Manufacturing and Customer Service excellence.

Working as a key manufacturer to the Power Generation sector and associated service industries since 1971, Hague Fasteners are once again breaking the mould and reinforcing the Best of British.

We never cut corners to win orders.

International Fastener Standards

We are often called to manufacture our Special Fasteners to all International Fastener Standards. We would like to share with you our simple comparison table that shows similar across referenced items across DIN NFE ISO and BS Standards.

Remember Hague Fasteners manufacture all standard fasteners but in unusual or highly critical materials, not just items to bespoke designs and drawings.

British Manufactured NonStandard Socket Screws

Hague Fasteners are one of the UK’s longest established manufacturers of Non Standard Socket Screws.

Our Socket Screws are often manufactured to common global standards but we are different in that we manufacture in material grades over and above those supplied by other NonStandard Socket Screw manufacturers. Often companies will only modify existing imported bulk produced screws sourced from the Far East, however due to the criticality of all components we supply we pride ourselves in being one of the few manufacturers that supply manufactured Socket and Allied products from UK sourced Alloy Steels, through hardened and tempered to meet the requirements of ISO 898 Part 1 Grades 8.8 10.9 & 12.9

For years we have perfected the manufacture and supply of Heat resistant Non standard socket screws used in sensitive environments in superalloys such as Nimonic 80A, Hastelloy C276 & Monel 400. We often manufacture Special Socket Screw products with modified “undersize” threads to allow for component expansion in extreme working environments.

As proud British manufacturers we welcome all enquiries for NonStandardSocketScrews from 1pc or 10pcs, 25pcs through 100pcs to 500pcs, no enquiry is too small for our custom manufacturing.
