Non Magnetic B8LN Stainless Steel Fasteners

20140502-234857.jpg

The ultimate non-magnetic stainless steel fasteners are manufactured in extremely small quantities by Hague Fasteners.

The high Nitrogen content of ASTM A193 B8LN fasteners (304LN fasteners) creates an extremely low level of magnetic permeability and these special fasteners are used when is used where an extremely low level of magnetic permeability is required.

Special Fasteners in this specific stainless steel further exhibit the following desirable properties:-

Moderate pitting and crevice corrosion resistance
Excellent impact toughness at sub-zero temperatures
A higher proof stress yield than regular 304L stainless steel fasteners.
Non-magnetic, Very low ferrite level and very resistant to martensitic transformation. Relative magnetic permeability < 1.005 Good weldability. 304LN was originally developed as a higher strength version of 304L by raising the amount of nitrogen. However, the increase in strength is only modest and easily achieved through cold working. Further, duplex grades are now commonly used where higher strength bolting is required. The grade is now used in specialised applications where a very low magnetic response is needed. In standard 304L, a typical level of relative magnetic permeability is around 1.05-1.1 due to small amounts of ferrite in the austenitic structure. A completely non-magnetic material would have a value of 1.0. 304LN can achieve a maximum value of around 1.005, which is the lowest practical level of any steel grade. It is also very resistant to transformation to the magnetic martensitic phase which can occur on forming or cooling to very low temperatures. For this reason Hague's manufactured B8LN Special Fasteners are commonly used in specialised equipment where magnetic “interference” needs to be avoided and also for use in cryogenic equipment such as bolting for Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, reinforcing foundation bolts for structures surrounding MRI scanners also special fasteners in pressure vessels, and non standard socket screws in cryogenic applications.

17/4PH Fasteners

Grade 17/4 PH (1.4542) is one of the most common precipitation hardening stainless grades used for the manufacture of our Special Fasteners and our Non-Standard Socket Screws.

20140323-165442.jpg

17-4PH has good corrosion resistance whilst also offering high strength and good impact toughness, vital properties in many special bolting applications.

17/4PH is often specified where the following characteristics are required:

• Good corrosion resistance (slightly less than a 304 stainless steel)
• High hardness and high strength
• Controlled balance of mechanical properties by ageing (precipitation hardening)
• Improved toughness compared to 431 stainless and critically at sub-zero temperatures in the softer conditions
• Magnetic
• Thermal expansion comparable to carbon steel
• Easier to weld than martensitic stainless grades like 420 and 431

17-4 PH develops its high strength from the precipitation of copper particles in its martensitic matrix. It comes in various conditions denoted by H plus the ageing temperature in Fahrenheit (°F), for example H900, H1025 etc.

The higher the ageing temperature, the lower the strength becomes and the higher the ductility and toughness develop. The minimum 0.2% Proof Stress values can vary from 520 MPa to 1170 MPa depending on the condition.

CONDITION A
Soak at 1900 F (1038 C) for 30 minutes and cool below 60 F (16 C) for complete martensite transformation.

CONDITION H950
Treat Condition A material at 900 F(482 C) for 1 hour, air cool.

CONDITION H925, H1025, H1075, H1100, H1150
Soak solution treated material for 4 hours at specified temperature, air cool.

CONDITION H1150M
Soak solution treated material at 1400 F (760 C) for 2 hours, air cool, then re-heat to 1150 F (620 C) for 4 hours and air cool.

The combination of high strength and good corrosion resistance finds special fasteners used in:
Drive shafts, gears, hydraulic rams, valve stems, load cells, tensioning systems, quick release pins, fasteners, aerospace, medical devices, food processing, conveying equipment and fall arrest systems

B50A125E Bolts

B50A125E is a popular Creep resistant steel which is hardened and tempered to give critical reliability in high temperature applications with a usual upper continuous operating temperature limit of 580 degrees C.

20140312-213202.jpg

Hague Fasteners manufacture 422 stainless steel bolts and general special fastener products that are designed to be used at elevated high-temperatures whilst maintaining their high strength.

Hague’s special fasteners in B50A125E (422 Stainless Steel) are made to order and used commonly in thermal engines and power plants.

B50A125E (Alloy 422) is a hardenable stainless steel designed for use at temperatures of up to 1200ºF (649ºC). Alloy 422 has good resistance to scaling and oxidation.

Through heat treatment, high mechanical properties can be obtained.

Hague’s Alloy 422 Bolting is used in applications such as compressors or steam turbines and also in aircraft parts, valves, & other high temperature applications.

B50A125E Fastener Applications: Jet engine parts, high temperature bolting, compressor fasteners, steam turbine bolting, blades fasteners, aircraft components, engines bolts.

ASTM A453 660 Fasteners

ASTM A453 660 Fasteners

A286 is a precipitation hardening, austenitic stainless steel designed for use at temperatures up to 1300°F (704°C), where high tensile strength, excellent creep strength and good corrosion resistance are required.

Hague Fasteners are experts in the manufacture of all types of A286 fasteners, from A286 Hex Nuts, A286 Hex Bolts & A286 Studbolts through to complete special fasteners made to Drawings.

20140302-085424.jpg

Hague Fasteners manufactured Special Fasteners in specification ASTM A453 660 are used in all types of applications including jet engines, gas turbines, and super-charger components.

A286 is also used extensively in the oil and gas industry, and in high-strength non-magnetic and cryogenic applications. It is austenitic at all temperatures.

HEAT TREATMENT
Two heat treatments are commonly used for this alloy.

For high stress rupture strength:
Solution treat at 1800°F (982°C) for 1 hr, rapid cool, age at 1325°F (718°C) for 16 hrs, air cool. (e.g., ASTM A638 Grade 660 Type 2; ASTM A453 Grade 660 Class B; ASTM A891 Type 2; AMS 5732)

BS EN ISO 3506 Special Stainless Threaded Fasteners

Stainless Steel Fasteners to BS EN ISO 3506 Grades A1, A2 (A3) & A4 (A5)

20140226-080117.jpg

General grades of Stainless steel fasteners are specified in BS EN ISO 3506

Part 1 covers bolts, screws & studs
Part 2 covers nuts

These specifications replace BS6105, which is withdrawn as a British Standard.

Chemical Compositions
The chemical compositions of austenitic stainless steel fasteners with the designations A1, A2 & A4 are shown in table 1. (These designations are common for the different parts of BSENISO 3506. The composition ranges are based on part 1. The table shows some of the grade designations, which have been used, in other British Standards

Table 1 – Chemical Compositions for Austenitic Stainless Steel Fasteners
Grade
Chemical Composition (% maxima unless stated)

20140225-232736.jpg

Notes
Either sulphur or selenium (less common) is allowed in grade A1.
These additions make the steel free machining for ease of manufacture but can reduce the corrosion resistance under certain conditions such as marine environments (chloride pitting attack risk)
Grade A2 does not specify molybdenum additions but allows these (Normally the deliberate addition of molybdenum makes the grade A4).
The carbon level of grade A4 is allowed to be up to 0.12% max. to obtain specified mechanical properties at larger diameters.
The less common grades A3 & A5 are included in the standard and are based on the A2 & A4 grades respectively. These have additions of either titanium or niobium/tantalum to form ‘stabilized’ grades and can be used as alternatives to A2 or A4 grades, with carbon levels restricted to 0.03% max, in applications where there may be a risk of intergranular corrosion.

Hague Fasteners excel in these less common “stabilised” fastener grades and are one of very few UK manufacturers that carry stocks of Grade A5 class 80 (A5-80) bar material for production of special stainless threaded fasteners.

The standards also refer to a duplex composition as steel group “FA” (ferritic-austenitic) in their informative annex sections. This grade (similar to a 1.4462, 2205 of EN 10088-1) is
not currently included in BS EN ISO 3506 but is likely to be included in the future, the standard suggests.

Three “property classes” are assigned to each of the austenitic stainless steel fastener grades in parts 1 and 2 of BS EN ISO 3506. Table 2 shows the 0.2% proof stress, tensile strength and elongation values for each of these property classes for the austenitic stainless steel bolts, screws, studs and nuts.

Notes
The mechanical property limits are minima.
Property class 50 represents the steel in the annealed condition.
The most common & readily available supply condition is property class 70, which represents a “cold drawn” for the bar stock from which the fasteners are made.
Property class 80 is based on severely hard cold drawn bar.

All tensile stress values are calculated and reported in terms of the nominal tensile stress area of the thread.

The elongation measurement is determined on the actual bolt or screw length and not on a prepared test piece. This is expressed in millimetres (mm) of extension and not as a percentage elongation.
i.e. A = (L2 – L1) (where L1 = original length and L2 = length after fracture) d = nominal diameter of bolt, screw or stud.
