NonStandard Socket Screws

NonStandard Socket Screws

Many of the NonStandard Socket screws Hague Fasteners manufacture are made to customers specific designs and drawings, however Hague Fasteners have recently seen a sharp increase in the number of Standard Socket Screws they are being asked to manufacture.

Due to exceptional demand, new production methods have been recently introduced to ensure Hague can meet the growing demand for regular Socket Screws where Customers specifications now dictate the preferred Country of manufacture to be of EU or UK origin, and where full certification is required.

Bolting Property Classes 8.8 10.9 12.9 & 14.9

Bolting Property Classes 8.8 10.9 12.9 & 14.9

Have you ever stopped to think what the carbon steel bolting grade numbers signify. They’re not just random digits used to identify a material grade. These grade are stipulated in various international standards including DIN 267 and ISO 898. The specific detail should be verified from the required standard directly but as a general guide this feature will assist.

20140226-212752.jpg

The symbol for the property classes of hex bolts, screws and studs consists of two numbers separated by a decimal point. 8.8, 10.9, 12.9, 14.9 etc.

Take the whole number before the decimal point. This number, when multiplied by a hundred, gives you the nominal tensile strength in newtons per millimetre squared.

The digit following the decimal point, multiplied by ten, gives you the yield stress ration, or the percentage ratio between the lower yield stress and the nominal tensile strength.

If you now multiply the first number by 10 times the second number you will arrive at the notional yield stress in newtons per millimetre squared.

The main characteristic property of Nuts is the thread stripping strength (proof stress).

The property classes of nuts are designated by a number which indicates the maximum appropriate property class of bolt with which they should be fitted. Therefore nut property classes are the same as the bolt designation initial number.

Internationally, mechanical stress is expressed in newtons per square area, in bolting N/mm2. Common practise overseas is to use the unit megapascal (MPa), which corresponds directly to N/mm2.
For example 1,200 N/mm2 = 1,200 MPa

An example using a hex bolt with property class 10.9

The Nominal tensile strength of a 10.9 bolt is calculated
10 x 100 = 1,000 N/mm2 (MPa)

The Yield stress ratio 9 x 10 = 90%

The Yield stress is therefore
90% of 1,000 = 900 N/mm2 (MPa)

Bolts and Studs can be supplied in Property classes

Nuts of a higher property class can normally be used in the place of nuts of a lower property class.

* Property classes 14.9 are not detailed in the ISO or ANSI standards.

BS EN ISO 3506 Special Stainless Threaded Fasteners

Stainless Steel Fasteners to BS EN ISO 3506 Grades A1, A2 (A3) & A4 (A5)

20140226-080117.jpg

General grades of Stainless steel fasteners are specified in BS EN ISO 3506

Part 1 covers bolts, screws & studs
Part 2 covers nuts

These specifications replace BS6105, which is withdrawn as a British Standard.

Chemical Compositions
The chemical compositions of austenitic stainless steel fasteners with the designations A1, A2 & A4 are shown in table 1. (These designations are common for the different parts of BSENISO 3506. The composition ranges are based on part 1. The table shows some of the grade designations, which have been used, in other British Standards

Table 1 – Chemical Compositions for Austenitic Stainless Steel Fasteners
Grade
Chemical Composition (% maxima unless stated)

20140225-232736.jpg

Notes
Either sulphur or selenium (less common) is allowed in grade A1.
These additions make the steel free machining for ease of manufacture but can reduce the corrosion resistance under certain conditions such as marine environments (chloride pitting attack risk)
Grade A2 does not specify molybdenum additions but allows these (Normally the deliberate addition of molybdenum makes the grade A4).
The carbon level of grade A4 is allowed to be up to 0.12% max. to obtain specified mechanical properties at larger diameters.
The less common grades A3 & A5 are included in the standard and are based on the A2 & A4 grades respectively. These have additions of either titanium or niobium/tantalum to form ‘stabilized’ grades and can be used as alternatives to A2 or A4 grades, with carbon levels restricted to 0.03% max, in applications where there may be a risk of intergranular corrosion.

Hague Fasteners excel in these less common “stabilised” fastener grades and are one of very few UK manufacturers that carry stocks of Grade A5 class 80 (A5-80) bar material for production of special stainless threaded fasteners.

The standards also refer to a duplex composition as steel group “FA” (ferritic-austenitic) in their informative annex sections. This grade (similar to a 1.4462, 2205 of EN 10088-1) is
not currently included in BS EN ISO 3506 but is likely to be included in the future, the standard suggests.

Mechanical Properties
Three “property classes” are assigned to each of the austenitic stainless steel fastener grades in parts 1 and 2 of BS EN ISO 3506. Table 2 shows the 0.2% proof stress, tensile strength and elongation values for each of these property classes for the austenitic stainless steel bolts, screws, studs and nuts.

Table 2 – Mechanical Properties for A1, A2 and A4 Austenitic Stainless Steel Bolts, Screws, Studs and Nuts (BS EN ISO 3506 Parts 1 & 2)

20140225-233110.jpg

Notes
The mechanical property limits are minima.
Property class 50 represents the steel in the annealed condition.
The most common & readily available supply condition is property class 70, which represents a “cold drawn” for the bar stock from which the fasteners are made.
Property class 80 is based on severely hard cold drawn bar.

All tensile stress values are calculated and reported in terms of the nominal tensile stress area of the thread.

The elongation measurement is determined on the actual bolt or screw length and not on a prepared test piece. This is expressed in millimetres (mm) of extension and not as a percentage elongation.
i.e. A = (L2 – L1) (where L1 = original length and L2 = length after fracture) d = nominal diameter of bolt, screw or stud.

Hague Fasteners are not concerned with the tonnes of Far Eastern, uncertified, imported A2 & A4 commercially available standard bolts and nuts. Hague Fasteners forte is the specialist manufacture of bolting components in Quality Assured EU sourced raw materials particularly in the higher property classes, A2-70, A2-80, A4-70, A4-80, A5-70, A5-80

A Focus on UK Titanium Fasteners

Hague Fasteners are satisfying global demand for specially manufactured standard and non standard fasteners in all grades of Titanium Metals.

20140225-075504.jpg

The rapid production of Titanium Hexagon Bolts and Nuts alongside Studbolts and
Engineer Studs through to all types of Non Standard Socket Screws have ensured that in recent times Hague are the one stop titanium fastener solution.

Hague are manufacturing every day in all the pure Titanium metals (most commonly Titanium Grade 1, Titanium Grade 2, Titanium Grade 4) and the Titanium Alloys (Titanium Grade 5, Titanium Grade 7, Titanium Grade 9, Titanium Grade 11, Titanium Grade 12).

Pure Titanium Fasteners are often used due to their extremely high resistance to corrosion, whereas more commonly the Fasteners manufactured in the Titanium Alloys are specified for their fantastic strength to weight ratios.

Typical case studies of applications for each of the Titanium materials are:-

Titanium Grade 1
Pure Titanium, low strength but high ductility ideal for use in heat exchanger applications.

Titanium Grade 2
A more commonly specified grade than Grade 1. Pure Titanium Grade 2 offers a great combination of strength and ductility and for this reason is often used in pipeline applications.

Titanium Grade 3 is a High strength Titanium, often plate based components used in shell and tube heat exchangers.

Titanium Grade 5 is the most common Grade of Titanium Alloy used by Hague Fasteners. Our customers specify Grade 5 frequently due to the alloys tremendous high strength and high temperature resistance. Common bolting applications are for Subsea Fasteners and Aerospace use.

Titanium Grade 7 is ever growing in Special Fastener specifications die to the grades superior corrosion resistance in reducing and oxidising environments and is specified by OEM ‘s installing into Chemical production and processing facilities.

Titanium Grade 9 exhibits extreme high strength and corrosion resistance again specified within hydraulic piping & subsea environments.

Titanium Grade 12 is often used in Heat Exchanger applications as it has better resistance to high temperatures than the commercially pure grades of Titanium.

Hague have decades of special fasteners and non standard socket screw manufacturing experience using all Titanium round bar materials:-
