17/4PH Fasteners

Grade 17/4 PH (1.4542) is one of the most common precipitation hardening stainless grades used for the manufacture of our Special Fasteners and our Non-Standard Socket Screws.

20140323-165442.jpg

17-4PH has good corrosion resistance whilst also offering high strength and good impact toughness, vital properties in many special bolting applications.

17/4PH is often specified where the following characteristics are required:

• Good corrosion resistance (slightly less than a 304 stainless steel)
• High hardness and high strength
• Controlled balance of mechanical properties by ageing (precipitation hardening)
• Improved toughness compared to 431 stainless and critically at sub-zero temperatures in the softer conditions
• Magnetic
• Thermal expansion comparable to carbon steel
• Easier to weld than martensitic stainless grades like 420 and 431

17-4 PH develops its high strength from the precipitation of copper particles in its martensitic matrix. It comes in various conditions denoted by H plus the ageing temperature in Fahrenheit (°F), for example H900, H1025 etc.

The higher the ageing temperature, the lower the strength becomes and the higher the ductility and toughness develop. The minimum 0.2% Proof Stress values can vary from 520 MPa to 1170 MPa depending on the condition.

CONDITION A
Soak at 1900 F (1038 C) for 30 minutes and cool below 60 F (16 C) for complete martensite transformation.

CONDITION H950
Treat Condition A material at 900 F(482 C) for 1 hour, air cool.

CONDITION H925, H1025, H1075, H1100, H1150
Soak solution treated material for 4 hours at specified temperature, air cool.

CONDITION H1150M
Soak solution treated material at 1400 F (760 C) for 2 hours, air cool, then re-heat to 1150 F (620 C) for 4 hours and air cool.

The combination of high strength and good corrosion resistance finds special fasteners used in:
Drive shafts, gears, hydraulic rams, valve stems, load cells, tensioning systems, quick release pins, fasteners, aerospace, medical devices, food processing, conveying equipment and fall arrest systems

UNS S31254 Fasteners

The high integrity bolts and special fasteners that Hague Fasteners manufacture are often installed into highly aggressive environments.

20140310-221405.jpg

Anti-corrosion materials are therefore commonly specified where reliance on a surface coating is simply impractical.

The 6% Mo Duplex Stainless Steel materials are among the best stainless steels for use in water and seawater giving excellent service in some very aggressive environments.

This various special fasteners including Hex Bolts, Eng Studs, Studbolts, Hex Nuts and Socket Capscrews Hague manufacture in 6Mo (254Smo) stainless are often specified due to the following characteristics:

• Comparable pitting and crevice corrosion resistance (PREN > 40, akin to SuperDuplex Fasteners.
• Excellent resistance to strong acids.
• Excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance.
• Higher yield strength than standard stainless steels available in Class 70 and Class 80 Cold Worked strength grades.
• Good impact toughness at sub-zero temperatures (even tougher than SuperDuplex grades).
• A cost effective alternative to some of the more expensive nickel base superalloys.

Hague Fasteners are manufacturing all types of UNS S31254 Special Fasteners and supplying global industry sectors such as:

Pulp and paper, Water Desalination Facilities, chemical processing plant, chemical tanker transportation, heat exchangers & Tubing Condensers, metal refining, flue gas desulphurisation (FGD), structural subsea fastener components, offshore oil and gas equipment, submarines & aggressive food processing manufacturing lines.

Spherical Washers

The price of “off the shelf” Spherical Washer Sets, also known as Equalising Washers or Levelling Washers, is often quite shocking.

Hague Fasteners are increasing the amount of spherical washer sets they are manufacturing in Case Hardened Steel but more commonly in through hardened alloys and stainless steels.

Spherical washers are a perfect solution for ensuring there is an even clamping pressure on critical fastening applications, particularly where a slight modification to the installation levelling is required.

Hague Fasteners can manufacture split sets of levelling washers to drawings or to DIN 6319 but increasingly the call for Hague’s special non-separating sets is growing.

20140308-000705.jpg

Covering all metric and imperial sizes, Hague’s unique design of non-detaching spherical washer sets are a much more economical solution than other commercially available levelling washer items.

The top half of the washer set has a convex shape and a smaller ID. It is secured to the bottom half concave washer that has a a larger ID. The free moving contained assembly allows for a levelling adjustment of up to 4 degrees angle.

The washer sets are precision machined from 316 stainless steel and through hardened class 10.9 carbon steel or indeed manufactured in ANY MATERIAL you need.

Due to the unique manner in which these non-detachable washer sets are assembled prior to delivery, any surface coating can be supplied, from Zinc & Blue Passivate, through Hot Dip Galvanised or Stellite, whatever is specified.
